My work combines two concepts that define me, the organic and nature-based form inherited from Catalan modernism that surrounds my life, and my interest in spirituality applied to Japanese calligraphy.
Alicia Gimeno, born in Barcelona (1989), trained in graphic design during her time in Mexico. From the beginning she was captivated by calligraphy, the gestures of the brushstroke, the stroke of the pen... And investigating the depth of the exercise of writing, she came across oriental calligraphy, thus endowing this manual gesture with spirituality, recognising that the activity of writing could also be a form of expression beyond languages and reading comprehension.
Alicia's work does not need great chromatic explosions. It is not that colour is conspicuous by its absence, but simply that the artist does not need it to express herself through painting. Her intention, with the representation of her abstract calligraphies impregnated with botanical essence, is to invite the spectator to introspection, to contemplation, where he discovers himself as part of a natural whole, part of a nature of which we often do not remember being part of. A representation of roots, to think how close we are and how close we should be to the purest and simplest of the planet.
These paintings are not simply an investigation in the visual field, but seek to deepen the energetic expression of the stroke through movement. The Qì, 氣 the purest essence, which also lives in our being, expressed through the movement of the brush, of the ink, as in oriental calligraphy. In her studies of oriental thought, Alicia delves into different concepts that she seeks to experience, capture and understand through her work, such as Wabi Sabi, the flag of beauty in imperfection, or Ma 間, negative space that can only be understood through its context.
Mi obra aúna dos conceptos que me definen, la forma orgánica y basada en la naturaleza heredada del modernismo catalán que envuelve mi vida, y mi interés por la espiritualidad aplicada a la caligrafía japonesa.
Alicia Gimeno, natal de Barcelona (1989), se formó en diseño gráfico durante su etapa en México. Desde el inicio quedó cautivada por la caligrafía, la gestualidad de la pincelada, el trazo de la pluma… E indagando en la profundidad del ejercicio de escribir, se topó con la caligrafía oriental, dotando así a ese gesto manual de espiritualidad, reconociendo que la actividad de escribir, también podría ser una forma de expresión ajena a idiomas y comprensión lectora.
La obra de Alicia no necesita de grandes explosiones cromáticas. El color no es que brille por su ausencia, sino que simplemente la artista no lo necesita para expresar a través de la pintura. Su intención, con la representación de sus caligrafías abstractas impregnadas de esencia botánica, es invitar al espectador a la introspección, a la contemplación, donde se descubre a sí mismo como parte de un conjunto natural, parte de una naturaleza de la que a menudo no recordamos formar parte. Una representación de raíces, para pensar lo cerca que estamos y lo cerca que deberíamos estar de lo más puro y sencillo del planeta.
Estas pinturas no son simplemente una investigación en el ámbito visual, sino que buscan profundizar en la expresión energética del trazo a través del movimiento. El Qì , 氣 la más pura esencia, que vive también en nuestro ser, expresada a través del movimiento del pincel, de la tinta, al igual que en la caligrafía oriental. En sus estudios del pensamiento oriental, Alicia ahonda en distintos conceptos que busca experimentar, plasmar y comprender a través de su obra, así como el Wabi Sabi, bandera de la belleza en la imperfección, o el Ma 間, espacio negativo que solo puede entenderse por su contexto.
